The generative AI capabilities in Google Search aim to enhance the user experience by providing faster understanding of topics, discovering new viewpoints and insights, and enabling more efficient task completion. A new "Snapshot" tab powered by AI will appear at the top of the search page. This summary will include links, product summaries, and images related to the search query. The AI technology also gathers information from real users, not just websites.
Users can opt for conversational mode, which allows them to use natural language and refine their search results with the assistance of AI. The Snapshot feature will suggest next steps, such as asking follow-up questions and exploring further, leveraging Google's retained context and useful links.
Regular search results with links to various websites will appear below the snapshot. When searching for a product, users will see a snapshot highlighting key factors to consider and suggesting products that match their requirements. This experience will include relevant product descriptions, up-to-date reviews, ratings, prices, and product images, empowering users to make informed purchase decisions.
For example, if someone is searching for a new bike, Google Search might suggest asking about the available color options, understanding the user's intent and specific interests.
Google emphasizes that this new generative experience aims to complement web content rather than divert attention away from it. Traffic will continue to be directed to websites, and search ads will still appear in dedicated ad slots, ensuring a balance between user experience and advertising.
The new Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment will be available in the US through Google Labs soon. Users can sign up for the waiting list by accessing the Labs icon in the Google app or Chrome desktop.
Overall, Google's introduction of generative AI capabilities to Search aims to provide users with a more informative, efficient, and personalized search experience while maintaining a focus on web content and user needs.

A new iOS bug is causing iPhones to crash when a specific sequence of four characters (""::
) is typed into certain search fields, like the Settings app or App Library. The bug triggers Apple's Springboard to crash, briefly returning users to the lock screen. While it’s an annoying issue, it poses no security risk or data loss. Tests show that the bug affects iOS 17 more severely than iOS 18. Apple has not yet addressed the issue, so users are advised to avoid typing this sequence until a fix is released.
