In its most expensive wireless headphone, the AirPods Max, Apple is all set to offer two new features as part of the upcoming iOS 18.4 update. Now, the AirPods Max headphones will gain lossless audio playback. However, this feature will only be available in the refreshed version of AirPods Max, with a USB Type-C port. Apple has also announced plans to roll out low-latency performance with the USB on its premium wireless headphones.

AirPods Max New Audio Specification Updates

According to an official release by Apple, with the latest iOS 18.4 update, the AirPods Max will support lossless audio playback. Users who connect their Apple headphones using a USB Type-C cable can now listen to 24-bit, 48kHZ lossless audio on compatible devices. Tidal or Apple Music service providers offer lossless audio streaming.

Apple stated that the AirPords Max will receive low-latency audio playback support with iOS 18.4 update. The low-latency mode can be enabled when USB Type-C mode is connected to headphones. This will enable the support for other Apple features normally supported on its wireless headsets, like Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.

Like wired headphones, the AirPods Max will ensure low-latency audio playback, making it suitable for a high-end gaming experience. Moreover, Apple has claimed that the AirPods Max will deliver performance on part with built-in speakers on its iPad, iPhone, or Mac devices.

The noticeable aspect of this update is that the updated low latency and lossless audio support will only be rolled out in AirPods Max variants coming up with a USB Type-C port. The previous versions with the Lightning connector option will not receive this update.

In the market, Apple has introduced a new USB Type-C to 3.5mm audio cable that enables users to connect their AirPods Max to devices that do not have USB Type-C ports, like in-flight entertainment systems. The same cable can connect the iPhone 15 and newer models to play audio on stereo speakers with a 3.5 mm audio port.
